KEETCH/YOUNG/STEMBRIDGE/FACEY/STRINGFELLOW. Seeking information on the KEETCH family who were located in the Chard, Somerset area from at least 1750 till abt 1900. Earliest record - Samuel KEETCH married Hannah MOULTON on 23 May 1763 at Combe St. Nicholas Parish Church. One of their sons, Thomas KEETCH, married Ann ? who, according to the 1851 census, was born in Newfoundland. They, in turn, had a son named Thomas KEETCH (druggist) who married Eleanor YOUNG on 28 May 1842 in Piddletrenthide, Dorset. This couple eventually moved from Chard to Galveston, Texas in 1846. Related Somerset families from this period include the following:

Samuel KEETCH m. Alice BLAKE - 5 Jan 1784

Hannah KEETCH m. George WHITE - 21 May 1804

James KEETCH m. Ann STANTON - 4 Nov 1807

Hannah KEETCH m. John STRINGFELLOW - 24 Feb 1827

Helen KEETCH m. Philip FACEY - 1826

Ann KEETCH m. Issac STEMBRIDGE - 1843.

Mary KEETCH m. Charles STEMBRIDGE

Any information about the maiden name or Ann, wife of Thomas KEETCH, or her Newfoundland connection; the background of Eleanor YOUNG (father James) of Piddletrenthide, or the listed related families would be greatly appreciated. I will be glad to share any data I have.

OSBORNE Merriott, Somerset,1680+. I am researching the Osborne family from Merriott, Somerset, from the late 1600s, descended from Alexander Osborne, a Monmouth Rebel. A few branches of the family came to Australia around the mid 1800s. I would like to hear from anyone researching Osbornes in Merriott, as it seems most (if not all) Osbornes of Merriott were related to each other. Mr Peter Scott, of Sydney, Australia, has done extensive research into the family.

Researchers with ancestors from the village of Merriott in Somerset may be interested in viewing my website at: www.merriottfamiliesgenealogy.net

STARKEY My GG Grandfather was a man named John Starkey who came to the UK after being born in the US. He was based at the 6th Dragoon Guard (Carabiniers) Cavalry Barracks in West Fordington and married a Lady called Mary Ann CURTIS (born in Beaminster) on 2/2/1862 at The Parish Church of Fordington. This was Mary Ann's second marriage as her 1st husband died. Her original maiden name was ELLIOTT and her father was Emanuel Elliott, a weaver, (born Beaminster c.1789). His wife was called Sarah Elliott (born Beaminster c. 1793) and they had 3 children: Mary Ann (born c. 1832), George (born c. 1834) and Robert (born c.1839).

Mary Ann had 2 sons from her first marriage: Edwin Curtis (born c. 1856 at Beaminster) and Adolphus Curtis (born 1858, Beaminster). From her second marriage she had another 4 children: Mary Ann Starkey, John Robert Starkey, Elizabeth Ann Starkey, and Joseph Starkey. This family moved from Dorset to Aldershot and then on to Manchester.

Edwin & Adolphus may have adopted the name Starkey (or Starkie on census returns) and if any members are looking for these men, this would cause them a problem which I have solved!

Does anyone now whether the Dorset and Somerset ports received many immigrants from the US ? John Starkey was born in the US but the name Starkey is from the Lancashire/Cheshire area so it looks like my family came back from the US when everyone else was going out there!

GOODRIDGE. I have been searching for information about my G G grandfather William Goodridge, who according to his marriage certificate to Ann SHANNON from Ennis, Co. Clare Ireland at the Congregational Church, Huntley (near Bendigo, Victoria, Aust.) on 12th March 1857, was born in North Petherton in 1832 (religion C of E). The son of James Goodridge, occupation Farmer, and Honor WILLS.

However the birth certificate of his daughter born 11 July 1863 gives his birth place as Petherton and his age 35 (born 1828?) his wife’s age is given as 25 and born at Ennis, this matches the information on their wedding certificate.

The birth certificate of another child born 20 September 1869 gives his age as 40 (1829?) and birth place Bristol, his wife’s age is given as 28 (only aged 3 years in six years) and her birth place also shown as Bristol.

At his death in 1886 his age was given as 59. (1827?). Obviously there appears to be some confusion about his birth date.

During a recent visit to the UK, I spent a day at the County records office searching the Parish records for the North Petherton church and a couple of nearby Parishes for his baptism, also the 1851 census and couldn’t find any record of William or his parents. It is possible that they may have migrated to Australia before 1851, though I can’t find a record of their arrival.

In the 1851 there were a couple of Goodridges listed but I don’t know if they were related.

Has any member come across the Goodridge family in their Somerset researches or could they suggest some Parishes around North Petherton where the family may have lived.
