The Service

The Pedigree and Family Tree Service offers a facility whereby family historians with Somerset and Dorset connections can benefit from the research of others.

The Society holds more than 3100 sets of documents donated by members and others. The collection consists mainly of pedigrees and family trees, but also includes some copies of deeds and indentures, lists of names extracted from parish registers, a few wills and some family histories and biographical notes. The collection is continually increasing.

Additions to the Archive

The Society welcomes additions to the collection of pedigrees and family trees from both members and non-members. Provided documents are legible and the result of serious research they will be acceptable so long as they contain at least one named individual who was born, married or died in Somerset or Dorset.

Material on paper is preferred. We do not at present have the facility to receive pedigrees or family trees in electronic format.

For obvious reasons the Society cannot guarantee the genealogical accuracy of any items supplied to enquirers.

Computer Searches

The Society maintains a computer index of every person named in the collection. Details of the arrangements for instituting such a search of the computer database for an individual or family are set out in the search form, see below.

The Cost

The Pedigree and Family Tree Service will supply:-

	Copies of the revised alphabetical Millennium List at Ł2.50 each. Orders should be accompanied by a C4 self-addressed envelope, including a 33 pence stamp (UK postage).
	Copies of pedigrees, family trees etc. held in the collection at 15p per page copied. The number of pages for each item is given in the Millennium List. A C4, addressed envelope with stamps sufficient for the weight should accompany your request.

Overseas Members only: If you are paying by credit card, the cost of postage can be charged to it. Please make this clear in your request for information.

The cost of a computer search

is Ł2.00 for up to five names (Ł3.00 in the case of non-members). Membership number must be quoted or non-membership rates will apply.

Please apply by post using the form provided: Click here to open a page with the form and details of applying for a computer search. Use your Browser's print facility to print out the form, which will fit on an A4 page. When complete, use your Browser's back button to return to this page.

The results of the search will be returned to you by post. In the event of a successful search, details of the pedigree, family tree etc. will be set out in the way they appear in the Millennium List. From this it will be possible to calculate the cost of obtaining a copy of documents containing the name(s) you are searching for.

Payments for searches and lists should be by cheque made payable to S&DFHS, in pounds Sterling. For small amounts, the equivalent in British Postage Stamps is accepted.

Membership number must be quoted with all requests or the non-member charge will apply.
