1841 Census Indexes Dorset 1841 Census Indexes - Click here for details Other CDs published by the Society The East Dorset Superfamily CD The Society has a collection of nearly 3000 pedigrees and family trees, together containing more than 300,000 names. The computer index makes it possible to identify those names in the collection that appear in more than one pedigree or family tree. If the details for a particular individual tally it is possible, using one of the commercially available family history programs, to begin building a "superfamily" of people who are related either by birth or through successive marriages. We are currently building such a file using Generations software: it contains the names of more than 6200 individuals related in this way, all connected to parishes in East Dorset. The Society now sells a CD-ROM containing details of names, dates, locations and relationships saved from the Generations program via the Gedcom method. Altogether, the number of pedigrees/trees involved is more than 50. The reference numbers of the relevant pedigrees/trees are included in the details provided on the CD-ROM. (The reference numbers are those appearing in the Millennium List which provides a brief description and number of pages of a particular pedigree/ tree). The CD also contains photographic images of more than a hundred parish churches in East Dorset, locations for the baptisms, marriages and burials of the individual members of the "Superfamily". These colour photographs have been taken especially for the project, and are not copies of previously published images. Price £10.80 UK & £11.30 Overseas.

Brief Descriptions of some of our PublicationsDorset Militia Ballot Lists, 1759 to 1799, Vol. 1- East Dorset, Vol. 2 - West Dorset. These two volumes contain lists of civilians, men between the ages of 18 and 45 or 50, who, if chosen in a ballot, had to find the money to recruit a man willing to serve in the County Militia, or to volunteer themselves for service. The two books, East Dorset and West Dorset, give the Surname, Forename, Occupation and Parish of all the men, and in most cases shows also his family, his height and any other miscellaneous details found in the original documents. Over 8,500 names in each volume. The Place of the Rural Blacksmith in Parish Life, 1500 to 1900. This book is a memorial tribute to Marcia Evans, one of the members of our Society who was researching West Country Blacksmiths and had submitted a thesis for her MA from Bristol University. Sadly she died suddenly before the results were declared. She was awarded the Degree posthumously. This book incorporates the results of her research. Dorset PCC Wills & Administrations - 1821 to 1858 - (2nd edition) This second edition lists all Dorset Wills between these dates which can be found in PROB 11, all Probate grants in PROB 8 and every Administration in PROB 6. In all almost 6,000 names. In the book they are listed alphabetically by Surname and gives Forename, Year, Parish, Occupation and other noted details. Somerset & Dorset Absconders - 1801 to 1858. Compiled from the "Hue & Cry" This lists over 800 military and civilian, deserters and absconders, from Somerset and Dorset, taken from the "Hue & Cry", 1801 to 1858. It gives an almost photographic picture of the person including what they were wearing at the time. In fact a 19th century police "mug shot". This publication is supported by the John Bishop 1641 Fund. Dorset People involved in the growing of Hemp & Flax - 1782 to 1793. A book giving an account of the hemp and flax industry with a surname index of those involved plus a fiche giving details of the size of their farm, their crop and the bounty they received etc. 10,000 Fallen Remembered on Dorset War Memorials Murial Monk has roamed all over the pre-1974 County of Dorset visiting over 300 parishes and recording more than 10,000 names. Where information about the regiment, rank or date and place of death has been given, this has been included. The names appearing on individual gravestones have not been recorded since a complete list of these is available through the War Graves Commission. The CD which accompanies this book contains just over 1,400 extra names and photographs of nearly all the memorials with more information about many of the people whose names have been recorded. The History of Wilton Gaol, Taunton, Somerset. by Peter Parrish. Peter sadly passed away before he had completed his research on Wilton Gaol. His widow has kindly allowed a member of the S&DFHS to download the information from his computer and this book is an edited version of his work. The book gives a detailed history of Taunton prisons from 1182 to 1992 and an alphabetic index of over 300 names mentioned in the text. This publication is supported by the John Bishop 1641 Fund.
