February 2002

The South Dorset Group met on 13th February 2002. The scheduled speaker, Antoinette Woollven was ill so our March talk was brought forward and Chairman, Tony Pomeroy, spoke about London Repositories. Tony Johnson, the South Dorset Group's press reporter has written the following review of Tony's talk.

Tony outlined in considerable detail the various sources of information available ot the family historian in London. He recommended that members should travel there by train and underground rather than by road.

Tony's first port of call was the Family Record Centre not far from the 'Angel' Public House in Islington, where, for the sum of £6.50, a copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate would be despatched by post within a few days. Films of the 1841-1891 census may also be examined and photocopies obtained on the spot. Many other records such as films of Canterbury Wills and Non Conformist Parish registers can be seen here too.

Not far from the Family Record Centre is the London Metropolitan Archives which houses parish documents relating to Greater London as opposed to those relating to the City of London which may be found at the London Guildhall. Copies of recent wills may be obtained from Atlantic House, Holborn, whilst the Society of Genealogists is a veritable Aladdin's cave for researchers and which is open to the public on payment of a fee.

Further afield at Kew is the Public Record Office which is the home of the nation's official documents. Here are available details about the Armed Forces, the Metropolitan Police, immigrants, cabinet meetings, war diaries - the list is endless!

Tony finally described the security measures which exist at all locations and emphasised the importance of planning in advance in order to save wasting time.
