What are Monumental Inscriptions?
Monumental Inscriptions (MIs) are transcriptions taken from gravestones,
tombs, plaques and war memorials found in cemeteries, church interiors and
churchyards of all denominations and they provide very useful information for
family history research.
Records have been compiled by the S&DFHS and donated by other people over a
number of years. These transcriptions have been indexed (see below).
Many of these records contain useful genealogical information such as dates
of birth and death and family relationships. Some also have a plan reference so
that the grave can be located. Remember these are the records of the memorials
which were found and deciphered at the time of transcription and it does not mean
that your ancestor was not buried in the location concerned. Also not all
records are of deaths, some are vicars, benefactors etc.
