The International Genealogical Index

The IGI is an index compiled on computer by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons), of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The list of names shows events such as Baptisms, Births, and Marriages, the Parish where the event took place and the date of the event, extracted from Parish Registers. Most of the records are for the period up to 1837. There are, however, some entries of a later date, from other sources.

The 1992 edition of the IGI, on microfiche, is held for printout service ONLY. The counties are as for the period before reorganisation in 1974 and cover:

bulletEngland 41 counties
bulletScotland 33 counties
bulletWales 12 counties
bulletThe remainder of the British Isles, that is the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Ireland, are each in one group (not by county)

NOTE:

The IGI should always be used as a FINDING AID, and any information found in the IGI should be checked against the original source, such as a Parish Register, EVERY TIME.
