The Research Service

Volunteer members of the Somerset & Dorset Research Service, will do research on your behalf in the records held at their Research Centre. Due to the popularity of the service they are limited as to how much time they can spend on each enquiry.

Information we require from you

It will be to your advantage if you specify as clearly and precisely as possible the information that you are seeking, and enclose any relevant information which might assist us,

bulletPlease write clearly or type your enquiry. Whether contacting us by letter or e-mail, remember to include your name and postal address.
bulletWherever possible include first name and surname and at least a rough idea of the date and place where you require the search to be made.
bulletAdd any other data about members of the family.
bulletInclude a (UK) daytime telephone number so that we can contact you for clarification if necessary.

Please allow for a reasonable amount of time to answer your questions.

Charges

For a search of our record indexes for one person £2.00 plus the cost of printouts and photocopies @ 20p per page.

A search of one complete parish £2.00. plus the cost of printouts and photocopies @ 20p per page.

For more detailed research an initial fee of £2.00 after which you will be sent a quote for the cost of the work required to find the information.

Payments

These may be made by one of the following methods:-

Secure on line payment

This may be found at www.parishchest.com

Go to "Societies & Groups", on the left-hand side of the page; then select "Somerset & Dorset FHS", from the main list, then select "Research Services".

Choose the amount that you wish to pay (amounts can be combined), by clicking on the "Add to trolley" button. Then follow the payment instructions on the site.

If payment of not received within 30 days, we will assume that you do not require the work which has been done for you.

Cheques/Postal Orders

Payment by open limited cheque is safe for you, and prevents us having to send refunds. You should leave the amount and figures line blank for us to complete, but (important) write on the second line "not to exceed (x) pounds". Please make the cheque payable to SDFHS. Cheques etc. must be in sterling currency.

Credit/Debit Cards

We can accept payments by the following credit or debit cards: Visa, Visa Debit, Visa Electron, Access, Mastercard, Maestro, Solo We will need the following information:

1) The type of card you are using

2) The number, exactly as shown on the card

3) The security code (the last 3 figures printed on the signature strip on the back of the card)

4) The expiry date

5) The full name, as it appears on the card

6) The full address to which the card is registered, with house number and post code

7) Day-time telephone number and e-mail

8) A stated monetary limit for this transaction

Regrettably, we cannot accept American Express, Electron or Diners Club

How long will I have to wait?

Enquiries are dealt with in the order that we receive them. All enquiries are dealt with by volunteers and we hope to reply to most requests in two weeks.

Copies and Copyright

Much of our material is copyright and is supplied on the understanding that anything that we send will be used for personal use only and will not be passed on to others.

1901 Census Vouchers

Vouchers are available now at face values of £5, £10 & £50 from Somerset & Dorset Family History Society Book Sales, PO Box 4502, Sherborne DT9 6YL, England. Please send cheque or credit Card details with SAE.

Please note that because of the need for an SAE to return vouchers, orders will NOT be accepted by e-mail.
